Education

I earned by Bachelor of Music Education in 1993 from East Carolina University. I majored in voice (high baritone, not quite a tenor) and minored in piano. My final grade point average was 3.64 and course work included four years of voice lessons and a senior recital that counted for 8 semester hours! My professor considered me an "anomaly" as French was the language I was best at singing and pronouncing. I look back on my college days with fondness and have no regrets whatsoever. The music skills I learned have helped me in all walks of life. Besides the four years of voice lessons, my coursework included two years of music theory; two years of music history; group classes in woodwinds, brass, percussion, and strings; and one semester of composition (I wish I had taken more, I loved it and had an excellent professor, Dr. Mark Taggart, who even wrote a symphony while I was at East Carolina!).

Experience

Kim L. from Somerset (Waxhaw, NC) Roger taught my son Max for over two years, took him from finding middle C to advanced Mozart, Bach and other music that Max selected. Roger's musical knowledge is extreme and he will adapt his teaching style to individual learning personalities. When Max had some less enthusiastic or frustrated moments, Roger would make every effort to re-motivate him with positive encouragement and by finding fresh music that inspired him. Max is an absolute pleasure to listen to on the piano now. So is Roger by the way if you can catch him playing some of his favorites between lessons :) Recommend as highly as possible! I taught piano to K-12 aged children in the Ballantyne Area of Charlotte, North Carolina, from December 2013 until September 2016. I thoroughly enjoyed teaching all the precious children in my care. I love teaching kids of all ages, starting at 4 (depending on child) and up through 18. My biggest thrill is when I see a child's eyes light up and I "see the light bulb come on", that they have grasped what it is I am trying to teach them. I became a member of Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society in 1992, partially as a result of my piano composition "Melancholy", which is also registered with ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers). I don't just teach mechanical playing and reading skills. I try to go the extra mile and teach children the "why" behind the music, including music theory, harmony, composition techniques and music history. I also like to teach, when appropriate, chords, chord progressions, and how to incorporate them, even into their own compositions.
