EducationMasters in Electrical Engineering from NC State Univ. with GPA of 3.85
ExperienceI attended NC State University, earning a Bachelor of Science and graduating first in my class. I received a full NDEA academic scholarship to attend graduate school and received a Masters of Electrical Engineering degree.
I am now retired from Johns Hopkins U. Applied Physics Lab where I worked as an engineer on NASA projects such as Voyager, Galileo, and Ulysses to name a few. More recently, I led a team of engineers in designing a hyper-spectral visible and infrared scanning spectrometer for the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter mission. Math has been fundamental to everything I accomplished. In many ways, it's like a language. You have to first learn the basics, then gradually become "fluent" through practice and application.
I have taught engineering students and have tutored students in middle school through college. I can often identify the stumbling block that is preventing a student from understanding. I try to explain things in plain English and use examples to get the point across. Understanding is emphasized, not just memorization. "The sum of the angles in a triangle is 180 degrees". Everyone memorizes that, but I can show you why in about 30 seconds. After that you will know how to find the sum of the angles in almost any figure without memorizing a formula.
Different people learn in different ways. If a student is not catching on, I try different approaches - different ways of saying the same thing, drawings, other examples. Sometimes it helps if the student tries to teach what they know to me. In short, there are many ways to solve a problem and that applies to both mathematics and to methods of learning.
Whether the student is interested in a career that requires a strong math background, or is just trying to pass some required courses, I can tailor the material to suit the need.

Best tutor you can hope for. Of the several tutors we have had for our two sons, Dennis is by far the best. The rare combination of impressive credentials, experience, clear vocation for teaching and affordability put Dennis in a class of his own. It is evident that he's not in it for the money, but to make a difference - and he does. His total command of the subjects allows him to approach problems from different angles to fit the student's learning style, and rather than just arriving at the solution, he seeks to achieve real comprehension of the fundamentals and the process. Most importantly, however (especially when dealing with teenagers) Dennis has infinite patience and good humor, and manages to motivate even the reluctant student; my son liked and respected him very much, and I am pretty certain he would not have passed his AP physics class on his own, yet achieved a B with Dennis' help. Additionally, his professionalism and integrity are flawless: he always arrives on time, but does not watch the clock for departure. He goes the extra mile; if provided with class materials, he is always prepared and follows up at no extra charge. In fact, sometimes I felt embarrassed because he seemed to prepare and work harder than my son did, yet this seemed to be all right with him. If Dennis can engage even the reluctant teenager, I suspect he would enable the self-motivated student to surpass his or her own expectations. I can't recommend him highly enough. Thank you Dennis.
Dennis is low key and does not get frustrated when teaching. He is always on time and is well prepared. If you are looking for a fabulous instructor you will not be disappointed.
Dennis is an awesome tutor. He has helped me learn college algebra, college statistics, and a finite math course that had a little of everything. He is reliable and does not watch the clock: he is focused on teaching. Some of my sessions lasted an hour and most went over from 14-45 minutes. He never charged me extra! He did not lose his patience with me when I did not understand. If math is a struggle Dennis is great at finding new ways to explain the material so it makes sense. My wife is a retired school administrator and she has evaluated hundreds of teachers over the years. She noted that Dennis is a natural at teaching and gave him top honors for his approach to adult learning. If you need a tutor and are willing to put in the needed effort Dennis is the perfect choice.
