EducationI majored in Latin at Davidson College, have master's degrees in English and in Religion from Wake Forest University, and have a PhD in Education from UNCG.
ExperienceMy expertise is in middle school Latin, and I would most like to have students and tutorees for Latin I and II. I have tutored high school students and I have taught Ecclesiastical Latin, from the beginning through reading medieval texts, at Wake Forest's Divinity School, but I have a special interest and background in introducing middle school students to Latin. I taught middle school Latin at a private school for 11 years and now (1) offer middle school Latin as a course, using the Cambridge system or the text of your choice, for homeschoolers (bonus for homeschoolers: I can teach during normal school hours) and for others who want enrichment beyond what their school offers; (2) offer tutoring for middle school, high school, and college students enrolled in courses at school; and (3) offer customized Latin instruction for adults who would enjoy a new experience with an old language!
If you would like to begin learning Latin from scratch, for students of any age I use the Cambridge Latin books, which you will need to buy (Unit 1, for example, which would be a school year's worth of work for a middle school student or a semester for an older student, is $28 on amazon, and the workbook is $16.). If you are already in a course and want tutoring, I will work with whatever system you are using. I prefer Cambridge, especially for younger learners, for its reading-based and culture-rich approach. Motivated adult learners might prefer Latin for the New Millennium, a more grammar-driven and very authentic approach. We will decide together the best course for you or your younger learner.
Rates vary according to frequency of meeting and the intensity of the course. The base rate for introductory Latin is $40/session (a session being however long it needs to be, but an hour is about as long as people can really focus), moving through higher rates for targeting more specific obstacles, up to $65/session for English literature and writing help, and other topics involving large amounts of work outside the session.
I also have expertise in Religious Studies, with a particular interest in World Religions, and would be glad to create a course for homeschoolers, adult learners, etc.
HobbiesI really enjoy life and have many enthusiasms, including Lewis Carroll, Doctor Who, Marvel Comics, tea, my cat Agent Thursday Next, cooking, David Bowie, U2, reading, travel, and learning.
