Education

I attended NC State University, earning a Bachelor of Science and graduating first in my class. I received a full NDEA academic scholarship to attend graduate school at NCSU and received a Masters of Electrical Engineering degree with a minor in mathematics. I also had continuing education courses from the Whiting School of Engineering at Johns Hopkins U.

Experience

I am retired from the Johns Hopkins U. Applied Physics Lab where I worked as an engineer on NASA projects such as Voyager, Galileo, and Ulysses to name a few. More recently, I led a team of engineers in designing a hyper-spectral visible and infrared scanning spectrometer for the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter mission. Math has been fundamental to everything I accomplished. In many ways, it's like a language. You have to first learn the basics, then gradually become "fluent" through practice and application. I have taught engineering students and have tutored students in middle school through college. I try to explain things in plain English and use examples to get the point across. Understanding is emphasized, not just memorization. "The sum of the angles in a triangle is 180 degrees". Everyone memorizes that, but I can show you why in about 30 seconds. After that you will know how to find the sum of the angles in almost any figure without memorizing a formula. Different people learn in different ways. If a student is not catching on, I try different approaches - different ways of saying the same thing, drawings, other examples. Sometimes it helps if the student tries to teach what they know to me. In short, there are many ways to solve a problem and that applies to both mathematics and to methods of learning. Whether the student is interested in a career that requires a strong math background, or is just trying to pass some required courses, I can tailor the material to suit the need.

Hobbies

I feel having broad interests helps in every way. I enjoy music, history, religion, auto repair, carpentry, and many other activities. I have been director of music at two churches, leading the senior choir, children's choir, and band. I have created music videos for our on-line services during Covid when live singing was not possible.
